west は古英語 west（西へ）から続く、方角の「西」を表す語。地図を北が上になるように置いたときの左側で、太陽が沈む側という日常の感覚とも結び付けられる。名詞としての the west のほか、west coast「西海岸」のように名詞を前から説明することもできる。
