westernの語源と覚え方
覚え方
古英語 west（西へ）に、方角を表す形容詞語尾 -erne（のちの -ern）が付いた語で、中英語ではwesterneという形であった。「西の・西方の」が原義である。
地理的な「西洋の・西部の」という意味に加え、アメリカ西部開拓時代を舞台にした映画や小説のジャンルを指す名詞「西部劇」の意味でも使われるようになった。
同じ -ern を持つ語には northern（北の）・eastern（東の）・southern（南の）があり、方角+-ern で「〜の方の」という形容詞になるパターンで覚えるとよい。
