locate（置く・所在を定める）+ -ion（行為・結果・状態）。ラテン語には同じ組み立ての locātiō（配置・賃貸） があり、-tiō が「その動作と結果」を表す語尾。もとは「置くこと・置かれた状態」。
背景の *stel-（据える・置く） のとおり、「据えられた場所」が芯。そこから「位置・所在地」、映画の on location（ロケ地で）、IT の「保存先」まで、どれも「どこに置かれているか」。
place が漠然と「場所」なのに対し、location は特定して指し示せる位置。動詞 locate、形容詞 local と一族で、loc =「場所」でまとめて押さえる。
