findingの語源と覚え方
覚え方
find（見つける）+ -ing（動作やその結果を表す名詞を作る）。find は古英語 findan（見つける） を受け継いだ語で、*pent-（行く・道） に遡る。
つまり原義は「探し当てる」より前に「道を行く→行き当たる」。歩いていって出くわす、という像が出発点である。同じ *pent- は path（道）にも通っている。
名詞の finding は「発見したもの・調べて得た結果」で、実務では複数形が基本。research findings（研究結果）、the findings of the investigation（調査結果）、法廷では a finding of guilt（有罪の認定）。探した末に行き着いた中身が finding だと考えるとよい。
