現代英語 position は中期英語 posicioun に由来していますが、posicioun は論理学や哲学の用語で、「自身のスタンスや信条の表明」という意味でした。
そこから、現代英語 position に移り変わるに当たり、「人や物が占める場所」の意味が1540年代に生まれ、
1832年に「身分、地位、社会的地位」に発展しました。
また、1778年には「ダンスのステップ・ポジション」の意味、1883年に「性交時の体位」の意味、1781年に「軍事的な意味で占拠される場所」の意味が確認されています。positionは、日本語(外来語)として「ポジション」と認知されていますが、この「ポジション」と英語の position のニュアンスに大きなズレはありません。
