straddle は、両足を広げて何かにまたがる姿を思い浮かべる単語。その姿勢から、「またがる」「またいで渡る」という動作だけでなく、二つの立場の間に身を置く「中間の立場を取る・中立を保つ」という意味にも広がった。
自転車や塀にまたがる場面なら straddle、意見や陣営の間にまたがる場面なら「中立的な立場を保つ」と覚えるとよい。straddling は「またがっている」「二つの領域にまたがる」という形容にも使える。
