中英語 perspective は、もともと「光学」という学問の名前だった。芯にあるのは「per（通して）＋ spect（見る）」＝「向こうまで見通すこと」。
絵画の遠近法から「ものの見え方」へ広がり、現代では「視点・見方」と、距離を取ったときの「全体像・大局観」を指す。put things in perspective は「距離を置いて全体の中に位置づける」。
spect を見たら「見る」。inspect（中を見る）・aspect（こちらへ向いた見え方）・prospect（前を見る→見込み）・spectator と同じ家族で、perspective はその中で「見通した眺め」を担当する。
