horizonの語源と覚え方
覚え方
hor は「境・区切り」、izo は「〜にする」という動詞を作る語尾。境を定めるもの、が芯で、ラテン語 horizōn を経て、天と地が接して見える境目すなわち「地平線・水平線」になった。
見える世界の境界線、と捉えると具体的な意味を覚えやすい。
そこから、知識や経験によって見渡せる範囲という比喩が生まれ、「視野」も指す。expand one's horizons（視野を広げる）は、その境界を遠くへ押し広げるイメージである。
