ラテン語 horizōn（地平線・境界）に由来する horizon は、天と地が交差して見えるような遠い境目を表す。horizon を「見える世界の境界線」と捉えると、地平線という具体的な意味を覚えやすい。
そこから、知識や経験によって見渡せる範囲という比喩が生まれ、「視野・認識の限界」も horizon という。expand one’s horizons（視野を広げる）は、見える境界を遠くへ押し広げるイメージである。
