scopo（目的・意図・目標）と、視線を向けて観察する *speḱ- から、scope の中心イメージができる。目を向ける先にある「目標」から、観察できる範囲や、扱える範囲を表すようになった。
scope は、仕事・研究・法律などの「適用範囲」を指すほか、照準器や観察装置のように、対象を視野に入れるものにも使われる。つまり、どこまで目を向けて捉えるかが scope である。
