stance は、イタリア語 stanza（立つ場所・部屋）につながり、「どこに、どのように立つか」という背景をもつ。a boxing stance なら、ボクシングで足を置き体を構える「姿勢」を指す。
考え方にも使われ、a stance on education は「教育に対する立場」。take a firm stance なら、はっきりした立場を取ることになる。体の構えから、ある問題に向き合う構えへと広げて考えると、姿勢と態度が自然につながる。
