イタリア語 posta（郵便・郵便物）は、道沿いに設けられた中継所や駐屯地を表す語から発展した。旅人や兵士が一定の場所に配置され、そこで人や荷物を引き継ぐ仕組みが、郵便を扱う場所や郵便物の意味につながった。

古英語 post（柱・門柱）は、頑丈に立てられた支柱を指した。post（柱）には、前に・通り抜ける *per- と、立つことを表す *steh₂- のイメージが重なり、地面に固定されて立つものを表す。
柱は境界や門を示したり、建物を支えたりするため、post は「目印となる柱」「支柱」へ意味を広げた。post を見たら「立てて固定する柱」と覚えれば、fencepost（柵の柱）や signpost（標識柱）も理解しやすい。
