覚え方
ラテン語 assistō（そばに立つ・助ける）＝ ad-（〜へ）+ sistō（立たせる・止める）。「相手のそばに立つ」が原義で、そこから「手を貸す・助ける」になった。
主役を代わるのではなく、そばで支えるのが assist。サッカーやバスケの「アシスト（得点を演出するパス）」も、同じ発想の名詞用法。
st は「立つ」＝ *steh₂-。stand（立つ）・stable（安定した）・statue（立像）・consist（共に立つ→成り立つ）・resist（逆らって立つ→抵抗する）・insist（立ち続ける→言い張る）が同じ仲間。
