aid はラテン語 adiūtō（頻繁に助ける・徹底的に援助する）に由来する。adiūtō は adiuvō（助ける・励ます）+ -tō（繰り返しの動作を表す語尾）と分けられ、単に一度助けるのでなく、何度も手を貸す感じを含んでいた。
そこから aid は、人を支えたり困難を取り除いたりする「援助・助け」を表す。adiuvō は助ける、-tō は繰り返すと押さえると、aid の「手厚い援助」という由来を思い出しやすい。
