覚え方
scholarship は scholar（学者）+ -ship（地位・状態・技能・集団） という組み合わせである。直訳すれば「学者である状態・学識」で、学問に関する知識や能力を表す。
そこから、学問を修める人に与えられる「奨学金」という意味も発達した。学識そのものと、教育を受けるための経済的援助という二つの意味を、学問を中心に結びつけて覚えるとよい。
-ship は friendship（友情）や leadership（指導力）のように、身分・状態・能力を表す名詞を作る。scholarship では、scholar + -ship を見て「学者の状態・学問に関するもの」と読むのがコツ。
