fellowshipの語源と覚え方
覚え方
中英語 felaweschipe（交わり・仲間関係）= fēolaga（仲間・相棒）+ -sċiepe（状態や身分を表す名詞を作る）。古ノルド語 félagskapr（仲間であること・共同関係） とも重なる語である。
fēolaga は *peḱ-（家畜・財産）+ *legʰ-（横たわる）、つまり財産を一緒に置く間柄が原点。そこから「仲間としての交わり・親睦」となり、教会や団体の「会・同志の集まり」も指すようになった。
現代でよく出会うのは学術の用法で、大学や財団が研究者に与える特別研究員の地位、およびその奨学金・研究助成を指す（a research fellowship）。-ship は「〜である状態」を作る型で、friendship・membership と同じ。
