古英語 fēolaga（仲間・相棒） から。peḱ-（家畜・財産）+ legʰ-（横たわる） が重なった語で、財産を一緒に置いた者＝共同で出資する相手**が出発点である。
金や家畜を出し合って組む相手という具体的な間柄から、広く「仲間・同僚・同輩」へ意味が伸びた。fellow worker（同僚）、fellow citizens（同じ市民のみなさん）のように、名詞の前に置いて「同じ立場の」を表す用法が強い。
口語では「やつ・男」の意味でも使う（a nice fellow 気のいいやつ）。学術の世界では研究員・特別会員を指し、その地位や助成が fellowship。fellow は「同じ場に一緒に身を置く者」と捉えるとよい。
