覚え方
古英語 hēr（ここに） をそのまま受け継いだ語。芯は *ḱe-（これ・ここ） で、話し手のいる場所を指し示すのが本来の働きである。
同じ *ḱe- の系統には he（彼）・him が並ぶ。もとは「ここにいる人」を指す語だったと考えると、here と he が同じ出発点を持つのが腑に落ちる。方向を表す hither（こちらへ）、時間や理由の hence（それゆえ・今から）も同じ一族である。
日常表現が非常に多く、Here you are.（はい、どうぞ）、Here we go.（さあ行くぞ・始まるぞ）、Here it is.（ほら、これです）、here and there（あちこちに）、over here（こっちに）。here は「場所」だけでなく、相手に何かを差し出す身ぶりごと表すと押さえておくとよい。
