古英語 hē がそのまま現代の he。その元は *ḱe-（これ・ここ）で、もとは「近くにあるもの」を示す指示語だった。話し手の近くを指す語が、三人称の代名詞として固まったことになる。
同じ近さを示す系列に here（ここ）・hence（ここから）があり、h- で始まる語がまとまって「この場」を表す。
目的格の him、所有格の his も同じ語の変化形。不規則に見える he/him/his の三つは、すべて古英語 hē の格変化の名残である。
