ラテン語 collēgium = collēga（同僚）+ -ium（抽象名詞をつくる）。その collēga も con-（共に）+ lēgō（使者として送る） に分かれ、一緒に任に就く相手を指した。
同僚どうしの集まりを表す語が、団体や法人、さらに学寮、そして学寮を備えた学校へと移り、英語の college になった。
lēgō から出た英語は colleague（同僚）・delegate（代表として送る）・legate（使節）。con-（共に）は conform・conductor にも付いている。
