覚え方
collection は、ラテン語 collēctiō（集める行為・編成）に由来する。collēctus（集められた・編成された）をもとに、*kom-（共に・完全に）+ *leǵ-（集める）という、「ばらばらの物を一緒に集める」イメージを持つ。
そこから、集める行為そのものだけでなく、集められた物品や資料のまとまりを指すようになった。collection は美術品の「コレクション」にも、研究資料の収集にも使える。
-tiō（動作・過程・結果を表す名詞語尾）にも注目すると、collection は「集めること」から「集められたもの」へ意味が展開した語だと覚えやすい。
