覚え方

lect はラテン語 legō（拾い集める）で、「一か所へ」の col が付いた colligō は寄せ集めること。その行為と結果をまとめて名詞にしたのが collēctiō で、英語では「集めること」から「集められたもの」へ重心が移った。

だから collection は、美術品や切手のコレクション、資料の収集、教会の献金集めまで指す。a collection of essays（論文集）のように、中身のまとまりも表す。

動詞 collect に名詞語尾が付いた形と見れば、綴りでも意味でも迷わない。
