英語 mass はラテン語 massa(塊・かたまり)に由来する語。粘土や金属などをひとまとめにした「かたまり」が原義で、そこから物質の「質量」や、まとまった「大量」の意味に発展した。
なお「ミサ(宗教儀式)」を意味する mass は、massa とは別の語源を持つ同じ綴りの語なので混同しないよう注意。massa 由来の mass は massive(塊のように大きい・巨大な)と同族で、mass を見たら『ひとかたまり』とイメージすると、質量にも大量にもつながる。
