mess は語源がはっきりせず、中英語 mesh（どろどろの混ぜもの）がくずれた語とも、動物用の混ぜ餌を指す語から出た語ともされる。コアは、物が整然と置かれず、入り乱れてごちゃごちゃになった状態で、これが「散らかった状態」。
