ラテン語 dīluvium（洪水）= dīluō（洗い流す）+ -ium（抽象名詞を作る）。その dīluō 自体が dis-（ばらばらに）+ lavō（洗う・浴びる） で、奥には *lewh₃-（洗う） がある。「何もかもばらばらに洗い流す」が原義。
そこから「大洪水・豪雨」。旧約のノアの洪水を the Deluge と大文字で呼ぶ。比喩では「殺到・氾濫」で、a deluge of emails（メールの殺到）、a deluge of complaints（苦情の山）。
動詞は「氾濫させる／殺到する」で、be deluged with ~（〜が殺到する）の受動形が定型。同族に dilute（洗い流して薄める）・lavatory（洗面所）・launder（洗濯する）があり、lav/lu は「洗う」とまとめられる。
