bulk は、古ノルド語 búlki（塊・大量）に由来し、búlki＝ひとまとまりの大きな塊というイメージを持つ。さらに「外側に突き出る・誇らしく笑む」を表す *bʰelǵ- とつながり、内側に収まらず外へ張り出した大きさが中心にある。
