followingの語源と覚え方
覚え方
follow（後について行く）+ -ing。「後に来る」から、形容詞では「次の・以下の」になる。the following day（その翌日）、the following example（次の例）。
名詞では「ついて来る人たち」、つまり支持者層・ファン層を指す。have a large following（多くの支持者を抱える）、a cult following（一部の熱狂的なファン）。the following（以下のもの）と、まとめて指す使い方もある。
前を指す preceding（先立つ）が対語。following は「後ろに続くもの」で、時間なら「次の」、人なら「取り巻き」と読み分ける。
