drift は、drive（運転する・押し進める）+ -t（動詞から行為名詞を作る要素）と考えると、「押し進めること・進んだ結果」と覚えやすい。風や水に押されて、物が一定の方向へゆっくり移動することから「漂う」「流れる」、さらに雪や砂などの「堆積」も表すようになった。
