wander は、中英語 wandren(さまよう・放浪する)につながる。wandren の形には、さまよう wonden と、動作の反復を表す -erian が関わり、さらに古英語 wandrian(さまよう・旅する)へさかのぼる。背景には、周囲を曲がりながら不規則にさまよう *wendʰ- のイメージがある。
まっすぐ目的地へ進まず、道を曲がり、あちこちへ動くことから、wander は「目的なく歩き回る・彷徨う」となった。そこから、考えがあちこちへそれる「注意が散る」という意味も生じる。
wand- を見たら、道筋が曲がって目的地から外れると覚えるとよい。wanderer(放浪者)・wandering(さまようこと)・wanderlust(放浪への強い इच्छा)も、定まった場所や方向から離れて動くイメージで理解できる。
