ラテン語 continuō（つなげる・延長する、continuāre）= continuus（連続した・途切れない）+ -ō（名詞や形容詞から動詞を作る）。途切れない状態にすることから、「中断せずに続ける」「延長する」へ意味が発展した。
continuus は *kom-（共に・完全に）+ *ten-（伸ばす）というイメージで、要素を共に伸ばしてつなぐ感覚。continue のほか、continuous（連続した）・continuation（継続）も同じ仲間で、continu- を見たら「途切れずにつながる」と読むのがコツ。
