覚え方
ラテン語 discontinuō（中断する） = dis-（ばらばらに）+ continuō（連続させる）。「続いているものを断ち切る」が原義である。
continuō は *kom-（共に） と *ten-（伸ばす） からなり、「切れ目なく伸ばし続ける」イメージ。tend（伸びる・向かう）・extend（延ばす）・tension（張り）・tenor（持続する調子）と同族で、ten に「ぴんと伸ばす」を読み取ればよい。
補足: 商品の製造中止（a discontinued model）、薬や治療の中止、サービスの打ち切りなど、続けてきたものをやめる場面で使う硬めの語である。
