ギリシャ語 ζῷον（動物）= ζώς（生きている）+ -ῐον（中性の名詞を作る語尾）。「生きているもの」が動物、という捉え方がそのまま語になっている。
奥にあるのは *gʷeyh₃-（生きる）で、biology（生命の学）・vital・vivid・zoo（動物園）と同じ流れ。
-logy はギリシャ語の「言葉・論」から来た語尾で、geology・psychology と同じ作り。zoo は zoological garden の略。
