ラテン語 cloāca（地下の下水道） がそのまま英語に入った語で、まずは「下水道・汚水だめ」。古代ローマでは、都市の汚水を集めて流す地下水路をこう呼んだ。
生物学では、鳥類・爬虫類・両生類などが持つ 総排出腔。消化管・尿路・生殖路が一つの穴に合流して外へ開く構造で、「すべての排出物が集まる下水道」という見立てからこの名がついた。複数形はラテン語式に cloacae。
形容詞は cloacal。鳥の交尾を cloacal kiss（総排出腔どうしを合わせること）と呼ぶのもここから来ている。
