di（ばらばらに）＋gest（運ぶ）で、分けて運び分けること。食べ物を細かく分けて体へ取り込むのが「消化する」、文章を整理して短くまとめたものが「要約」である。
頭で情報を噛み砕く意味にも広がり、digest the news（情報を消化する）のように使う。形容詞 digestible は「消化しやすい・理解しやすい」。
gest は suggest（下から運び出す＝提案する）や ingest（中へ運ぶ＝摂取する）と同じ「運ぶ」である。
