覚え方
ラテン語 compendium（節約・短縮）＝ con-（共に）+ pendō（秤にかける・支払う）+ -ium（抽象名詞を作る）。「まとめて量りにかける」ところから「無駄を省いた分＝節約・短縮」を表した。
削って要点だけを一つに量りまとめたもの、が英語の「概要・大要・便覧」。a compendium of medical knowledge（医学知識の集大成）のように、広い範囲をコンパクトに収めた一冊を指す。
pendō の *(s)pend-（引き伸ばす） は、天秤に吊るして量る動作。pension（支払われるもの）・suspend（吊るす）・pendulum（振り子）と同族で、pend は「吊るす・量る」と読む。
