英語 summary はラテン語 summārium（要約・梗概）に由来する語。summa（合計・要点）＋ -ārium（物を置く場所を表す名詞をつくる語尾）からできた語で、「要点をひとまとめにしたもの」というのが原義。

そこから、話や文章の要点をまとめた「概要」の意味になった。summa は sum（合計）とも同じ語で、summary は『要点の集まり』と覚えると意味がつかみやすい。
