outlineの語源と覚え方

out（外へ）+ line（線）。物の外側をなぞる線＝輪郭を指すのがもとの意味。
外枠だけを取れば、中の細部は落ちて全体の形だけが残る。そこから文章や計画の「概要・あらまし」、動詞で「概要を述べる」になった。an outline of the plan / outline your proposal のように使う。
outline は「外側の線＝骨組みだけ」と押さえると、detail（細部）との対比で意味が安定する。in outline（大筋で）という言い方も覚えておきたい。
