brief はラテン語 brevis（短い・簡潔な目録や要約） に由来する。情報を長く説明せず、必要な点だけに縮めたものが brief であり、形容詞の「短い・簡潔な」、名詞の「概要・要約」、動詞の「要約する」へと展開した。
brief を見たら、「内容を短くまとめたもの」と考えるとよい。brief summary は「簡潔な要約」、brief someone は「要点を伝えて説明する」で、長い内容を短い形に整えるという共通イメージがある。
