draw は古英語 dragan（引く・曳く） に由来し、さらに *dʰregʰ-（引きずる） という形にさかのぼる。「引っ張って線を動かす」ことから「描く」、「引き寄せる」ことから「引きつける」、「自分の側へ引く」ことから「獲得する」へ意味が広がった。
draw の中心イメージは、物や人を自分の方向へ「引く」こと。線を引いて絵を描く、注意を引きつける、くじを引く、利益を引き出す、といった用法もこのイメージでつながる。
