覚え方

ラテン語 extractum（抽出された物）を取り込んだ語。もとは薬草などから引き出された中身のことで、外へ引き出されたものが出発点である。

名詞では「エキス・抜粋」で、vanilla extract（バニラエッセンス）・an extract from a novel（小説の抜粋）。動詞では「引き抜く・取り出す」に広がり、extract a tooth（抜歯する）・extract information（情報を引き出す）・extract data（データを抽出する）のように、対象を選ばず使える。

attract（引きつける）・contract（引き締める→契約）と同じ tract（引く） の仲間。ex- の「外へ」と合わせて「外へ引き出す」と読むとよい。
