覚え方
chemistry は、化学を専門とする人を表す chemist と、場所・慣行・集合的状態を表す -ry からできた語。歴史的には錬金術師を表す alchimista（錬金術師）と関係し、そのさらに根にある *ǵʰew-（注ぐ） は、物質を器に注いで混ぜるイメージを持つ。
物質を注ぎ合わせ、性質の変化や反応を調べる営みから、chemistry は「化学」や「物質の構成・相性」を表すようになった。chemist は化学を扱う人、-ry はその学問・領域と見れば、chemistry の形と意味をまとめて覚えられる。
