reduceの語源と覚え方
覚え方
英語 reduce は、ラテン語 redūcō（連れ戻す・元の場所へ引く）に由来する。re-（後ろへ・再び）+ dūcō（導く）で、「元の位置へ引き戻す」というのが原義だ。そこから、量や規模を元より小さく戻す→「減らす・縮小する・削減する」へ発展した。
dūcō の *dewk-（引く・導く） は、conduct（共に導く→指揮する）、induce（中へ導く→誘発する）、produce（前へ導く→生産する）にも見られる。duc／duct を見たら「導く・引く」、前の接頭辞で方向を読むのがコツ。
