ラテン語 redūcō（連れ戻す）= re-（後ろへ）+ dūcō（導く） から。英語の reductive は、物事を単純な要素へ引き戻して説明しようとする姿勢を表す。
a reductive argument（単純化しすぎた議論）のように、複雑さを切り捨てているという批判を込めて使うことが多い。学問上の立場としては reductionism（還元主義）。dūcō の *dewk-（引く・導く）は conduct・produce・introduce と同じ系統。
