中期フランス語 disgracier(寵愛を失わせる・面目を失わせる) から。dis-(失わせる)+ grace(好意・寵愛) で、もとは君主の引き立てを失うことだった。
宮廷で寵を失えば人目にさらされる。そこから「不名誉・恥辱」、動詞では「恥をかかせる」になった。grace(恵み・好意)を剥がされた状態と押さえると、単に「恥ずかしい」ではなく人前で面目を失う語感がつかめる。
同族に gracious(丁重な)・grateful(感謝している)・gratitude(感謝)。in disgrace(面目を失って)・fall into disgrace(失脚する)が定番の形である。
