de はフランス語 dé-（逆転・除去）、cal は calquer（写し取る）。合わさった décalquer は「敷き写して図柄を移す」ことで、その技法を指す décalcomanie の頭だけを取った短縮形が decal である。
19世紀に流行した、特殊な紙から絵柄を器物の表面へ写し取る技法の名で、そこから写して貼る図柄そのもの、つまり「デカール・転写シール」を指すようになった。
後半にあった -manie は mania（熱狂）と同じで、もとは「転写熱」といった語だった。長い décalcomanie が decal に縮んだ経緯を知っていると、綴りの短さに納得がいく。
