organic は、ラテン語 organicus（楽器の・器官の・有機的な） に関係する語で、organum（道具・器具・機関）+ -icus（関係を表す形容詞語尾） と捉えられる。organum は、さらに ** werǵ-（手作業で作る・物品を製作する）* というイメージにつながる。
道具や機関が、全体の中で役割を果たす組織的なものだと考えられたことから、organicus は「器官のような」「有機的な」という意味を持つようになった。そこから organic は、生物由来のもの、無農薬のもの、全体に不可欠なものを表す。organ（器官・機関）・organism（有機体）・organize（組織化する）をまとめて、organ を見たら、働きを持つ組織や器官と覚えるとよい。
