英語 chemical は新ラテン語 chēmicus（物質の組成や反応に関する）に、関係を表す形容詞・行為名詞を作る -al が付いた語。原義から一貫して「物質やその反応に関する」ことを表す。
この意味がそのまま保たれ、現代では「化学的な」という形容詞のほか、「化学物質」を指す名詞としても使われるようになった。
