ether（天空を満たすと考えられた物質）+ -ial（〜に関する形容詞を作る）。ラテン語 aetherius（天空・上層の大気の）に重なる語で、地上の重い空気ではなく、天上の澄んだ層に属することを表す。
そこから「この世のものと思えないほど軽やかな・霊妙な」となった。ethereal beauty（この世ならぬ美しさ）・an ethereal voice（透き通った声）のように、実体が薄く、はかなく美しいものを評するのに使う。
背後の *h₂eydʰ-（火をつける・火）は、天空の層を燃え輝くものと見た発想を残す。同じ ether を含む語に ethyl（エチル基）があり、麻酔薬の ether も同語である。
