celestial

ラテン語 caelestiālis（天の） = caelestis（天の）+ -ālis（〜に関する形容詞を作る）。「空・天に属する」が原義。

天文の文脈では文字どおり「天体の」で、celestial bodies（天体）、celestial navigation（天文航法）、the celestial sphere（天球）。宗教の文脈では「天上の・神々しい」＝ celestial beings（天上の存在）。

地上を指す terrestrial と対にして覚えるとよい。celest を見たら「空・天」。
