ラテン語 aethēr(上層の空・天空)から。芯は *h₂eydʰ-(火をつける・火)で、「燃えるように輝く上の空」が原義。地上の空気 air より上にある、澄んで光る領域を指した。
古代の自然学では天体を満たす第五元素、19世紀の物理学では光を伝えると考えられた媒質の名として使われた(後に実験で否定された)。「実体はないが空間を満たすもの」という響きはここから来ている。
綴りは aether / ether の両方があり、化学のエーテル(溶媒・麻酔)は ether が普通。形容詞 ethereal は「この世のものと思えないほど繊細な」。
