英語 displacement は、displace（所定の場所から動かす）に、行為や結果を表す -ment が付いた語で、フランス語 déplacement をなぞった形。déplacement 自体は dé-（逆転・除去）＋ place（場所）＋ -er（動詞語尾）からできた déplacer（場所から動かす）に、名詞語尾 -ment が付いたもの。
dé- はイタリック祖語 *dis-（離れて・分かれて）、place は印欧祖語 *pleth₂-（広がる・平らな）にさかのぼる。「平らに広がった場所から離す」が原義で、そこから「物をもとの場所から動かすこと」＝日常語の「移動」、物理学の「変位」という意味が生まれた。
*dis- の仲間には、英語の dis- を使う distant（離れて立つ）・different（別々に運ばれた→異なる）がある。dé- は「離れて・分かれて」と読むと、displacement が「元の場所から離れた状態」を表すことにつながる。
