フランス語 contour から入った語で、中身は con-（すっかり）+ tour（ぐるりと回ること）。周りを一周してできる線、つまり「輪郭」。

地図の contour line は同じ高さをたどる等高線。動詞では「輪郭を形づくる・体の線に沿わせる」で、contoured seat は体に沿った座席、facial contour は顔の輪郭。

tour（巡る旅）の仲間には detour（回り道）・tournament・turn があり、tour は「回る」。con- が付いて「ぐるりと一周」になる。
